Derald Wayne Oliphant

April 4, 1930 ~ March 28, 2020

Mr. Derald Wayne Oliphant, 89, died Saturday evening, March 28, 2020, surrounded by his family at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.  A private graveside service will be held at Browning Cemetery, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later time for family and friends.

Born to the late Lloyd M. and Daisy Clara Gardner Oliphant, Mr. Oliphant Retired in 1968 as a Command Sgt. Major in the Army, after serving 20 years of his life for our Country.  Following his Army career, he was a self-employed painter in the Oxford and Lafayette County community.  An active member of Clear Creek Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Training Union leader, and served on numerous committees. His love for his Church was demonstrated by his working on the Church building and grounds, and enjoyed going on short term mission trips that included many countries.  He also served as the men’s Director of the Lafayette Marshall Baptist Association for many years.  He loved horses and one time trained a yoke of oxen. In the 80’s when men’s softball was being played every weekend, he was an active member of Clear Creek’s Softball Team and the coach.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his former wife and mother of all his children, Jeri Knight Oliphant; daughter, Patricia Oliphant Bailey; sister, Sue Cisneros and brothers, Buford Oliphant, Melvin Oliphant, and Lloyd Gardner Oliphant.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Jordon Oliphant of Oxford, MS; daughters, Elaine Oliphant Brewer and Danny of Oxford, MS and Hope Oliphant Davis and Richie of Hernando, MS; step-son, Gaston Gibson, Jr. of Abbeville, MS; sisters, Sybil H. Cook of Memphis, TN, Nell Cockrell of Oxford, MS, Marti E. Nichols of Memphis, TN and Kay Tutor of Hendersonville, TN; son-in-law, Dale Bailey of Oxford, MS; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

In Memory of Mr. Oliphant’s service to our country the flag of the U. S. Army will be flown at Waller Funeral Home.
