Dorothy W.Montgomery
Bissell-Dorothy Witcher Montgomery, 82, crossed over to eternal life from Sanctuary Hospice House on Saturday, March 28, 2020. “Dot” as she was known by her closest friends, was born in Lee County on April 10, 1937 to James Lea and Katie “Mama Kate” Hubbard Witcher. She married the love of her life, Billy Hugh Montgomery, on Feb. 12, l955. They made their home in Bissell primarily but did live in Alabama, Louisiana and even one year in France when Billy was serving his country in the Air Force. A longtime member of Bissell Baptist Church, Dot’s working life was spent as an LPN and she was devoted and dedicated to her patients in all the seasons of their lives. She worked at Red Bay Hospital but many of her years were spent nursing for the late legendary OBGYM, Dr. P. K. Thomas. Ironically, they were cut from the same bolt of cloth!! She practiced everything from delivering babies to piercing ears. Dot was outspoken and opinionated, independent, resourceful and, to say the least, a southern character in her own right. She loved, later in life, looking out her window at God’s creation which gave her spiritual strength and comfort.
Visitation will be from 4 PM-4:45 today at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors. A private family service will follow at 5 pm. In the spirit of Dot’s take charge personality, she requested son’s in laws, Champ Finley and Ed Abernathy speaking and Steve Holland playing the piano and, for fear of being haunted for life, the three have accepted. Due the corona virus pandemic, those who may wish to participate in the service can do so online at www.hollandfuneraldirectors.com/Livestreaming. The family expresses appreciation for your acts of goodness. Condolences may be e mailed to hollandfuneraldirectors@comcast.net
Dot leaves behind her two daughters; Debbie Abernathy and husband, Ed of Shannon and Kim Finley and husband, Champ of Randolph. 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved Billy on May 25, 2007 and a sister, Martha Bratton.
Memorials may be made in her memory to Sanctuary Hospice House, P. O. Box 2177, Tupelo, MS. 38803.
