Ronald Cornelius Hurtt, Jr. was born May 7, 1968 in Salem, Arkansas, and passed away May 1, 2020 at his home on Franklin Street in Tupelo, Mississippi at the age of 51. He was one of three children born to Ronald C. Hurtt and Wilma Jean Cherry Hurtt.
Ron is survived by one sister, Cynthia Lee Anna Bennett of Thayer, Missouri, one niece Amanda, and two nephews Leslie Johnson, Jr. and Aaron. Also, four cousins, Connie McFann of Myrtle, Missouri, Sue Purcell of Thayer, Missouri, Susan Butterfield of Seymour, Arkansas, and Lynn Belk of Michigan, aunt Charlie and Charlotte Hurtt of Mammoth Spring, AR, great uncle David Armstrong, great aunt Venita Dillard of Michigan, and a long-time best friend since youth, Sean Langston of Lowry City, MO.
He was raised mostly by his grandparents, J.L. Cherry and Wilma Cherry and they were a big Godly influence on him over the years. In fact, Ron’s granddad, Mr. J.L. Cherry, taught him about song leading in the LORD’S church. Over the years, Ron enjoyed leading singing in THE LORD’S church including here at Gloster Street church of CHRIST.
Ron attended Thayer High School in Thayer, Missouri where he graduated in 1986. He also attended Freed Hardeman University where he earned a degree in teaching. During his senior year at Freed Hardeman University, he was named to the President’s List which requires a minimum 3.30 grade point average.
Those who knew Ron, knew that over the years, he was a steady worker and was always willing to work, which was a good example to all of us.
Ron was a serious BIBLE student because during BIBLE Class, he would be one of the first persons to answer some of Brian’s questions during class.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, Ronald C. Hurtt, and Wilma Jean Hurtt, his brother Brian Hurtt, who passed away in August 2013, and his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Cherry, and Mr. and Mrs. Arvel Hurtt.
In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation to the Dayspring Television Bible Program at Gloster Street church of Christ, 307 North Gloster Street, Tupelo, Mississippi 38804.
Ron loved THE LORD, THE LORD’S church AND THE BIBLE. One of the things you learned quick in a conversation with him was even in the midst of health challenges, in the midst of any obstacles he may have faced in his own life, he sincerely wanted to know how you were doing and would be more concerned about your welfare than his own. Again, a characteristic that is an example for all of us.
