Lee Alvis Swinney (75) passed away Friday, June 12, 2020 at the NMMC in Tupelo after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Lee and Opal Swinney. In 1963, Lee graduated from Wheeler High School, where he played basketball. He continued his basketball career at Itawamba Junior College. On February 26, 1966, Lee married the love of his life, Freida Glover Swinney and they had two children. He served as a member of the National Guard and worked for Bell South 33 years until he retired in 1998. Lee enjoyed sports, reading westerns, watching his grandsons play basketball and baseball, growing tomatoes, visiting his buddies at the shop and riding around Wheeler.
Lee is survived by Freida, his wife of 54 years; his daughter, Susan Swinney; his son, Todd Swinney (Melanie); his grandsons, Carter, Cole and Levi all of Wheeler; his sister, Elizabeth (Jim) of Saltillo; his brother, Jerry Swinney (Elaine) of LA; his sister-in-laws, Linda Swinney of Collierville,TN and Lisa Swinney of Baldwyn and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Lee was preceded in death by his brothers, WC and Danny Swinney.
Funeral services conducted by his nephew, Billy Glover and Lee's grandsons, will be held at the Baldwyn Chapel of Kesler Funeral Home in Baldwyn on Sunday, June 14, 2020 at 3:00 with visitation starting at 1:00 and continuing until service time. The family strongly encourages social distancing and masks would be appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.
