Mr. Devon R. Maxwell, 93, died Saturday, September 17, 2022, at his home in Abbeville, MS. The funeral will be Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Jay Derryberry officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1:00 P.M. Burial will follow in Eastover Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Maxwell was born on June 3, 1929, to the late Robbie and Mary Maxwell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserve and worked as a painter and wallpaper hanger. In his younger years, Mr. Maxwell enjoyed camping trips with his family, sharing with his children his love for hunting and fishing. A man of many hobbies, he was a skilled wood-worker, taught himself to play the guitar, and after his retirement, taught himself to use a computer. Mr. Maxwell was a mason and was a beloved member of Bay Springs Baptist Church in Abbeville, MS. Above all, he was a family man, cherishing each member of his family, including his precious dog, Gabby. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he set an example for his children of what it means to be a hardworking and honest man. In addition to his parents, Mr. Maxwell was preceded in death by his brother, Norris G. Maxwell.
Mr. Maxwell is survived by his beloved wife, Bobbye Maxwell of Abbeville, MS; daughter, Diane L. Steele of Hixon, TN; son, Tony Maxwell and his wife, Sharon of Abbeville, MS; sister, Roseann Little; six grandchildren, Dale Steele, Andy Steele, Regina McAllister, Carol Maxwell, Bobbye “B.J.” Maxwell, and Alli Clenney; as well as seven great-grandchildren.
