Fern Holifield Pegg

February 27, 1931 ~ March 26, 2023

Ms. Fern Holifield Pegg, 92, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo, MS, after suffering a stroke. The memorial service will be Friday, March 31, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 12:30 P.M.

Ms. Pegg was born on February 27, 1931, to the late L.N. and Mary Bessie Holifield. The youngest of five children, she was the only one of her siblings to be born in a hospital, before being taken home to the family farm in Paragould, Arkansas. She enjoyed the childhood that most can only dream of, living a simple life surrounded by her loving family. Ms. Pegg attended and graduated from Oak Grove High School. A bright and intelligent child, her teachers insisted that she skip 2nd grade, making her a member of the Class of 1948. She was both athletic and beautiful, playing on the basketball team and was elected Homecoming Queen.

Ms. Pegg married Glen Blount of Paragould, and together they raised three sons in Memphis, TN. She later married Charlie Pegg, and at the age of 42 welcomed her beloved daughter, Mary. From the moment she first laid eyes on her, she knew that she had a best friend for life. In 1982, they moved to Tupelo, MS, where she raised her daughter and worked at her son’s grocery store, Blount’s Big Star, until she retired in 1997. After retiring, she spent some time in both Birmingham, AL and Gainesville, FL before finally settling to Oxford, MS.

A lifelong gardener, she had a great love for flowers and days spent in the yard. Ms. Pegg could spend all day outside working away and never run out of something to do. She was always finding little ways to improve her already gorgeous yard, meticulously caring for it even in her later years. Known for her long-winded conversations, there was no such thing as a quick phone call with Ms. Pegg. She could go on for hours sharing countless stories from both past and present. She was a talented cook and immaculate homemaker, learning many of her skills and recipes from her own mother, “Big Mom”. She played a mean game of bridge and kept her mind sharp by reading and doing word puzzles daily. Perhaps her fondest role in life was of “Gran” or “Grandmother”, lovingly called both names by her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Pegg was preceded in death by her son, Richard Blount; brothers, Frank Holifield, Gale Holifield, and Notra Holifield; and her sister, Geraldine Nichols.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Moreton and her husband, Derek of Oxford, MS; sons, Eldon Blount of Oxford, MS and Stan Blount and his wife, Phyllis of Memphis, TN; ten grandchildren, Ginny Blount Griffin, Glen E. Blount III, Richard Blount, Jr., Alan Blount, Patricia Blount Mills, Laura Blount, Austin Blount, Anna Blount, Jackson Moreton, and Anders Moreton; as well as four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews; and daughters-in-law, Jan Blount, Robbie Chenault, and Kim Fox. In addition, she is also survived by her extended Holifield family, Keith, Susan, Drew, and Seth.

Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Ms. Pegg’s memory may be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, 5159 West Main Street, Tupelo, MS 38803 or online at https://secure.paperlesstrans.com/sanctuaryhospicehouse.
