MANTACHIE – Howard Sidney Underwood went home to be with the Lord February 14, 2023. He was born in Tupelo, MS, on January 30, 1941. Howard was the valedictorian of the Mantachie High School Class of 1959. He played on the first football team for Mantachie High School and scored the first touchdown. He was inducted into the Mantachie Hall of Fame in 2022. Howard started and coached the first little league baseball team for Mantachie. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. Howard loved racing cars and go carts. He enjoyed showing horses, pony pulling and field trailing dogs. Howard also loved watching rodeos and Gunsmoke.
Howard was happily married for 63 years. He is survived by his wife Shirley Underwood; four children, Ricky (Joann) Underwood, Wanda Nichols, Mickey (Kim) Underwood, and Brad (Wendell) Underwood; one sister Ann Smith (Ray); eleven grandchildren; and twenty-seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney Underwood and Sular Stanford Underwood; one grandson, Clint; and four siblings, Ray Underwood, Ruby Rusoe, Jackie Franks, and Zera Yielding.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 18, 2023, from 5 to 8 pm at Family Worship Center in Mantachie, MS.
Funeral Services will be Sunday, February 19, 2023, at 1 pm at Family Worship Center in Mantachie, MS. Bro. Murlin Johnson and Bro. Douglas Kitchens will be officiating. Burial will follow in Fawn Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Thomas Underwood, Brandion Underwood, Nick Miskell, Branson Underwood, Tyler Underwood, Jason Underwood, and Alex Kingsley. Honorary pallbearers will be Braxton Garrison, Landon Garrison, Brayden Ellis, Greyson Underwood, Tripp Hopkins, Larry Young, Renae Brown Hester, Colton Rogers, and Camden Rogers.
