Mr. Gerald F. “Ace” Hughes, 73, died Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at his home in Oxford, MS. There are no services planned at this time.
Mr. Hughes was born on July 20, 1950, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. A life-long and devoted fan of sports, his favorite teams were the Ole Miss Rebels Football and Basketball team, the Yankees, and the Boston Celtics. He rarely missed games, and could provide all the stats from memory. This passion for sports began in his high school years, when he played on the basketball team. He would enter the court to cheers from the crowd chanting, “We want Ace! We want Ace!” When a game wasn’t on, Mr. Hughes found entertainment watching the Price is Right and keeping up with his favorite characters on The Young and the Restless. He was gifted with a unique and special sense of humor that kept everyone on their toes. He was a loving pet-parent to his rescue animals, who held the largest part of his heart and brought him great joy and companionship. They were second only to Cassie, his best friend of 24 years, whom he loved dearly. Gerald would want nothing more than in his memory, for you to offer up a hearty, “How Bout Them Rebs!” He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thack Hughes.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his best friend, Cassie Green Pressley of Oxford, MS; sisters, Vicki Little of Collins, MS and Julia Johnson of Biloxi, MS; nephew, Jeff Johnson; special friends, Bubba and Cindy Green Bounds and Eric and Candace Lowstuter; dogs, Bert, Shirley, Mayday, and Ophelia; rescue rabbit, Pfitz; and many other nieces and nephews.
Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Mr. Hughes’ memory may be made to the Oxford Animal Resource Center, 413 McElroy Drive, Oxford, Mississippi 38655.
