Georgia was born on July 6, 1940, in Tula, Mississippi, to the late Iva Valenstine Johnson and Walton Escar Thweatt. As a server for the former University of Mississippi Bakery and snack store, she found satisfaction in her work preparing fresh baked goods and cakes daily for students and faculty to enjoy. While she loved her work at Ole Miss, Georgia found her true calling in life as a homemaker, perfecting the role of wife and mother. After stepping away from her job at the bakery, she still used her gifted hands to create beautiful wedding and birthday cakes for loved ones. Georgia lovingly and selflessly looked after her family and friends, caring for many children throughout her life as a grandma and babysitter. She’ll be remembered often and fondly for her kind, quiet, and gentle spirit, and her generosity as a mother, grandma, aunt, sister, and friend. Her wonderful, contagious smile will be missed by all. In addition to her parents, Georgia was preceded in death by husband of 64 years, Francis Joseph Rawson, and her sister, Barbara Thweatt Hinton.
Georgia is survived by her daughter, Theresa Jones and her husband, Patrick, of Arlington, TN; sons, Eugene Rawson and his wife, Tracy, of Juneau, AK, Thomas Rawson and his wife, Leah, of Franklin, NC, Aaron Rawson of Oxford, MS, and Richard Rawson of Oxford, MS; sister, Janice Upchurch of Water Valley, MS; brothers, Tom Thweatt of Oxford, MS, Bobby Thweatt of Oxford, MS, Jerry Thweatt of Taylor, MS, Howard Thweatt of Water Valley, MS, and Ricky Thweatt of Water Valley, MS; as well as 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Georgia’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
