Larry Gaston McKibben

Larry G. McKibben (Mac), 77, of Nesbit, MS, entered his heavenly home in the early morning hours of December 24, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Larry was saved by his Lord, Jesus Christ, at the age of 12, and faithfully devoted his life to Him since that day.  We rejoice in knowing that he was welcomed into the arms of Jesus, hearing the words “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

Born on April 27, 1947 in Bruce, MS, Larry grew up in Ellard, a small community just outside of Bruce.  He graduated from Bruce High School (‘65) where he was an incredible athlete, playing basketball, baseball, track and football.  He then graduated from Northwest Jr. College (‘67) and the University of Mississippi (‘69).  He married his junior high/high school sweetheart, Betty, in 1966.  Larry taught and coached at Ingomar High School before being drafted by the Army National Guard where he served until 1976.  He and Betty moved to Nesbit in 1970 when he began his 35 year career in insurance.

As an active member of First Baptist Nesbit, he was a deacon and taught the youth boys Sunday school class for 18 years.  His positive influence was truly a gift to so many.  After years of prayer, God blessed Larry and Betty with a baby girl, Jahnae, who quickly became his pride and joy.  He devoted his time to coaching her elementary basketball team, attending her numerous jr high and high school ball games, and driving her all over the country as she sang at various events.  He eventually gained an amazing son when Jahnae married Brian, and oh how he adored his two precious grandchildren, Brylee Faith and Jake Hudson.

Larry Mac was a great example to all who knew him, a true friend who never met a stranger.  He was tough and determined, yet caring and kind.  He had the gift of discernment, put others before himself, was extremely generous, and always saw the best in others.  With a smile that was infectious, he lived life to the fullest.  Mac enjoyed traveling, riding four wheelers, snow skiing and water skiing.  His motto was “Everyday is a Gift!”

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Glennie McKibben, and his in-laws, Ray and Armorette Box.  He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Betty Ann Box McKibben, daughter, Jahnae McKibben Cherry and her husband Brian, grandchildren, Brylee Faith and Jake Hudson Cherry, and a brother, Paul McKibben.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Broadway Baptist Church (7400 Getwell Rd, Southaven, MS, 38672), where he and his family have been members since 1990.  Visitation will be Monday, December 30th at 11:00 a.m with service to follow at 12:00 p.m.  Intermittent will be held at Desoto Memorial Gardens (630 Star Landing Rd E, Southaven, MS 38672) immediately following the service.
