Hurshel Hill

Guntown – Hurshel Duane Hill, Born December 15, 1931 in Baldwyn, MS, passed away on January 02, 2025, at the age of 93, He was born to the late Mary Ethel Rakestraw and William Mancil Hill. Hurshel told many stories of growing up picking cotton alongside his five brothers and three sisters and all their mischievous pranks throughout their youth. During his teen years, Hurshel loved to play basketball at Wheeler School. He shared fond memories of those games with his grandchildren. In 1951, he married Dorothy Lee Carroll, and they spent 66 years together before her passing in 2017. Hurshel, better known as “Papaw Hill”, celebrated many Easters hiding eggs over and over with all the grands. He is also remembered as a dedicated father who was genuine and humble. He illuminated every room he entered with his huge smile and unending laughter. Before moving to Baldwyn Nursing Home, Hurshel would be found relaxing in his recliner with a special family pet and faithfully attending church on Sundays. He was a member of Mayfield Church of Christ.

He is survived by his children, Delane Bradley (Phil) of Mooreville, Ruth Greer of Blue Springs and Gary Hill of Guntown; Grandchildren, Shohn Greer (Kelly), Kirk Greer (Kristy), of Blue Springs, Shannon Long (Kevin), Shelley Dobbs (Art), of Mooreville, and Garrett Hill of Tupelo; Great-grandchildren, Tyler Long (Bre), of Tupelo, Analyse Peugh (Andrew) of Richmond, Savannah Greer and Izabella Greer of Blue Springs, and Trip Hill and Sonny Hill of Tupelo; Great-great-grandchildren, Liam Long, Addison Peugh, Shepard Long, Barron “Bear” Long, Andi-Cate Peugh and Doc Peugh; host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Carroll Hill; his parents; eight siblings; Son-in-law, H.B. Greer and a grandson, Justin Greer.

Visitation will be at Waters Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 – 8:00 p. m.

There will not be a public service and burial will be in Mayfield Church of Christ Cemetery.
