Woodford S. Lovejoy, affectionately known as Woody, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his wife and children, in Oxford, Mississippi, on Sunday, January 12, 2025. Woody was surrounded by love and leaves behind a legacy of family, service, and hospitality that will be cherished by all who knew him.
The funeral will be Friday, January 17, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Quarles officiating. Woody was born in 1930 in Lafayette County, Mississippi, to the late Luther and Minnie Lovejoy. He was the youngest of five children, growing up under the watchful eyes of his older sisters, each of whom lovingly claimed to be “his boss.”
At just 14 years old, Woody set out on a remarkable journey, traveling alone to South Dakota to work on a ranch and send money back home to his family. It was during this formative time that he met the love of his life, Vera Moe. Their love story spanned 72 beautiful years of marriage.
Woody proudly served his country, enlisting in the military at the age of 21. His service took him through two wars, including the Korean War, where he earned a Purple Heart for his bravery and dedication. Following his retirement from the Army, Woody and Vera returned to Oxford, Mississippi, where he began a successful second career in the restaurant industry.
Woody’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for serving others were evident in the restaurants he owned and operated, including the renowned “Warehouse” in Oxford, “Woody’s” in Tupelo and Columbus, and “Woody’s on the Water” in Columbus. Known for his warmth, generosity and welcoming spirit, Woody brought people together both in his businesses and at home, hosting large family gatherings that were the heart of his life.
He also loved spending time outdoors, whether meticulously caring for his yard and garden in Mississippi or returning to South Dakota for hunting trips.
In addition to his parents, Woody was preceded in death by his five sisters, Serena Daniels, Marie Starnes, Margaret Lovejoy, Elaine Lovejoy, and Hazel Lovejoy.
Woody is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Vera Lovejoy; his three children, Charlene Hall Lindsey (TL), Craig Lovejoy (Mary), and Kirk Lovejoy (Shannon); his grandchildren, Valerie Gilliam (Justin), Christy Rowland (Kevin), Michael Hall (Amy), Kayla Lovejoy, Eric Lovejoy, Ashley Naron and Michael Naron; and ten great-grandchildren.
Woody’s life was one of service, hard work, and devotion to his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Woody’s memory may be made to Shiloh Baptist Church, 31 County Road 429, Oxford, Mississippi 38655.
