Ms. Roberta Ruth Butler, 95, died Friday, April 25, 2025, at The Elison in Oxford, Mississippi. There are no services planned at this time.
Ruth was born on April 5, 1930, in Aubrey, Arkansas, to the late Ruth Satterwhite and Robert Abernathy Butler. She grew up in Sardis, Mississippi. Ruth had a lifelong love of animals, finding joy in the companionship of her own pets and admiring the wildlife around her. A longtime resident of Memphis, Tennessee, she spent most of her adult life in the city, where she developed her career as a legal secretary. She was known for her spunky attitude, always staying true to herself. Ruth spent her final years in Oxford, Mississippi, with her beloved brother, Robert. The two reminisced on their years growing up in Sardis, exchanged many stories of where life took them in between, and treasured one another’s company. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Butler and sister Jean Butler Smith.
Ruth is survived by her four nephews, Rob Butler (Laura) of Oxford, Mississippi, Bill Butler (Icela) of Huntsville, Alabama, Grant Smith (Holly) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Mickey Smith (Kathy) of Atlanta, Georgia; and two nieces, Heard Critchlow (David) of Oxford, Mississippi and Lynn Christian (Paul) of Augusta, Georgia.
The family would like to acknowledge the many caregivers from multiple organizations that have helped us provide care and support to Ruth. Your work has meant a great deal to us and to Ruth also. Thank you very much.
