James Thomas “Cricket” Johnson

December 16, 1951 ~ April 30, 2025

Mr. James Thomas “Cricket” Johnson, 73, died Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at his home in Oxford, Mississippi. The funeral will be Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Buster Wilson officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow the service in Eastover Memorial Cemetery.

Cricket was born on December 16, 1951, in Orlando, Florida, to the late Alma Lois Coaten and Thomas Wesley Johnson. He served in The United States National Guard before beginning his career as a truck driver, hauling Corvettes all across the country until his retirement several years ago. While Cricket enjoyed his time on the open road, he found great joy in his retired years, marrying his beloved wife Mary just a little over a year ago. He attended First Baptist Church of Abbeville, Mississippi and was a member at North Oxford Baptist Church. He had a giving and kind heart, volunteering his time and effort to raise money for Boogie on the Ridge, to help support the Special Olympics. Cricket treasured time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, and was thankful for every moment with them. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Anderson, and his brother, Donald Duck Johnson.

Cricket is survived by his wife, Mary Hall East Johnson of Oxford, Mississippi; daughter, Michelle Williams and her husband, Grant, of Savannah, Tennessee; step-children, Steven Lewis, Scott Lewis, and Shannon Lewis, all of Oxford, Mississippi; sisters, Mary Ann Evans of Oxford, Mississippi, Dianna Davis of Oxford, Mississippi, Cathy Notestone of Monticello, Georgia, and Brenda Gill of Brandon, Mississippi; sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson of Jacksonville, Florida; brother, Michael Johnson of Oxford, Mississippi; brother-in-law, Ottis Anderson of Oxford, Mississippi; and two grandchildren, Sophie Williams and Parker Williams, both of Savannah, Tennessee.

Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Cricket’s memory may be made to The ALS Association, online at https://www.als.org/.
