Johnnie Edith Cox

Johnnie (Edith) Carson Cox died on March 25, 2026, peacefully in her home. Johnnie was born July 10, 1938, to Mitchell and Ora Carson in Buena Vista, Mississippi. She was the seventh of eight children. On August 1, 1955, she married Bill Cox. They began their life together in Memphis, Tennessee, before moving back to Mississippi in 1967 to raise their family. Throughout her life, Johnnie demonstrated a strong work ethic both inside and outside the home. She enjoyed many hobbies but especially loved gardening and quilting. She and Bill were members of South Prentiss Baptist Church.

Johnnie is survived by her children: daughters Vivian Steele (Bob) of Fort Worth, Texas, and Lisa Gilreath (Michael) of Gulfport, Mississippi; and sons Tommy Cox of Fredonia, Arizona, and Keith Cox of Marietta, Mississippi. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Khristen Price of Decatur, Alabama; Emily Steele-Gonzales (Ben) of Rhome, Texas; Jana York (Justin) of Nashville, Tennessee; Victoria Gilreath of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee; and Nathaniel Cox(Haley) of Fredonia, Arizona; and seven great-grandchildren: Jeremiah, Carter, Finley, Nora, Ella, Dayton, and Sylas. She is also survived by her sister, Veona Plenge (Reno) of Panama City, Florida; sister-in-law Aileen Cox Roberts (Ronald) of Alpine, Mississippi; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Johnnie was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; infant twin children, Edith Ann and William Anthony; her parents, Troy Mitchell Carson and Ora Catherine Wyndham Carson; grandson Sean Cox; and siblings Glen, Gene, Ruben, Wendall, Ruth, and Rachael.

Her service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 4, 2026 at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn, Mississippi, with visitation one hour prior.
