Okolona, MS – Bettye B. E. Thompson the fifth and third daughter of Fredrick and Ruby Thompson was called to be with Lord on Thursday, September 26, 2019, at 1:40 a.m. She was born in Chickasaw County, in the city of Okolona, where she developed into an outstanding, productive and active citizen.
Accepting Christ at an early age, she was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church and First Calvary. Health problems led to a change of residence. Living with her niece she continued worshipping at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Beloit, Wisconsin.
Education and preparation for the remarkable work done in the Okolona Public School System, Okolona College High School, Alcorn State University and Tennessee University when she earned a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.
Greatly respected and appreciated by her students at Bruce (Calhoun County) and Okolona (Chickasaw County for not teaching subject matter but skills for effective living as General manners, table etiquette, and appropriate dress for every occasion. She not only taught it but constantly demonstrated it.
With culinary expertise, she became a constant target when help was
Needed by co-workers, AKA (Sorority Sisters), Church members and friends she was also available for service in the National Council of Negro Women –NCNW Okolona Section, NAACP, and CCREPM.
Bettye is survived by two nephews, Ambrose Kirk (Mary), Dr. Wendell Thompson (JoAnn); one niece Freddie Kirk Wright (Memory), The Osbornes, adopted sister Nellie Adams, twelve nieces, and nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; attentive friend Ida Raspberry, Walter Goodman, James Brown and many more loyal family members and friends.
Services will be held on, Thursday, October 3, 2019, at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church 119 North Gatlin Street Okolona, Mississippi 38860 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. James Tucker officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will be at Oddfellows Cemetery in Okolona, MS. Fields Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
