Mr. George Michael “Mike” Murphy, 70, died Friday, April 30, 2021, at Baptist Memorial Hospital North MS surrounded by his loving family. The funeral service will be Monday, May 3, 2021, at 2:00 P.M. at Oxford-University United Methodist Church with Rev. Eddie Rester and Rev. Roger Shock officiating. Burial will follow in Eastover Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, May 2, 2021, from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. in West Hall at Waller Funeral Home.
Mr. Murphy was born on November 27, 1950, to the late Jacob Albert and Carol Jackson Moorman. Following his graduation in 1968 from Forest High School, he moved to Oxford and graduated with his BA from Ole Miss in 1972. While at Ole Miss, was an active member of Sigma Nu Fraternity where he made lifelong friendships and cultivated his love for all things Ole Miss. Throughout his life, he would continue following Ole Miss Sports and felt it to be his duty to share the gospel of his Rebels with any sports loving fans. Ultimately, if you knew Mike, you were required to love Ole Miss by default! He raised his family in Meridian, MS where he was a member of First Baptist Church before returning to Oxford in 2020 to be near his grandchildren. While his time living in Oxford was short, he enjoyed attending OUUMC and spending more time with his children and grandchildren. George worked as a real estate appraiser and served in the National Guard but he most enjoyed spending time outdoors on the golf course. Following his death this morning, The Lord provided a beautiful sunrise that reminded us of the lyrics to a favorite song from Dan Fogelberg, “To The Morning: “There is really no way to say no to the morning.” We are comforted knowing that he now and forever has the best view of all of our sunrises but remains with us in our hearts throughout each difficult morning.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Elisabeth Watts “Poky” Murphy of Oxford; a daughter, Erin Murphy Cromeans and her husband, John of Oxford; a son, Todd Murphy of Oxford and two grandchildren, Leah Copeland and Jack Cromeans.
Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Mike’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to a charity of your choice.

Dear Murphy family, I’m sorry for your loss and you have my deepest condolences. The loss of a loved one brings great pain and sorrow but you can gain comfort from Gods word the Bible. Acts 24:15 says “There is going to be a resurrection” so you can see your dear loved one again. A promise from our loving Heavenly Father. I hope this was a source of encouragement for the family.
