GW Dye

July 9, 1943 ~ September 10, 2022 (age 79)

GW Dye, age 79, of Shannon, passed from this earth on September 10th, 2022. G.W. was born on July 9, 1943 at Ft. Benning, Georgia to GW Dye, Sr and Ruth Foster Dye. He enlisted in the Air Force where he served as an Airman with the security police for four years, three of which were in Europe.

In October of 1964, GW married the love of his life, Shirley Roper Dye. GW and Shirley moved to Arizona near family during the mid-1960s. He worked for Magma Copper Company in their mines as a miner, motorman and skip-tender. In December of 1969, they welcomed a baby boy, Gary, into their family. Several years passed of life in Arizona before returning to their Mississippi roots and settling in the Mooreville community. In August of 1980, they completed their family with the birth of their daughter, Deanna.

GW held various different jobs including working at Malone & Hyde, JJ Rogers, Rockwell International and Krueger. He found his calling as an independent truck driver before becoming a long haul driver. All in all, GW was a truck driver for thirty five years, seventeen of those being with Action Industries. Some of his favorite memories of being on the road were the times he was able to take Shirley with him and show her parts of the country she’d only heard of such as Niagara Falls, upstate New York and parts of Canada. They were also able to journey west to Phoenix where they once lived.

After retirement, GW and Shirley continued some travel. They often traveled to spend time with Gary and his family wherever the Army had stationed them, as well as their daughter Deanna. Some of their favorite times were the times spent in the campgrounds along Grenada or Sardis Lake fishing around the dam and filling the freezer with fish before heading back home.

GW was a member of the Doty Chapel Baptist Church and a 32nd degree Scottish-rite Mason. He enjoyed wood working, gardening and fishing.

GW was preceded in death by his father, GW Dye, Sr, his mother, Ruth Dye McMurry and stepfather, Oneal McMurry. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley Dye and his stepbrother, Joe Davis. He is also survived by his children, Gary Dye (Gwen) of Athens, AL and Deanna Dye of Memphis, TN. Additional survivors include his two grandsons, Devon Dye and Reed Dye.
