In Memory of
JEAN ANITA SLATER
Jean Anita Slater of Starkville died on September 9, 2022 at Oktibbeha County
Hospital. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1927, she moved with her husband, Roy and
their two children to Starkville in 1960. Theirs was the first house built in Green
Oaks subdivision. She worked with Mrs. Lolly's Daycare, ARC (children with
disabilities), Garan, Herschede Hall Clock Company, and Arnold Industries. Upon
retirement, she and Roy opened and operated Back Roads Antiques, traveling the
country in search of antiques for their shop. They loved meeting visitors to their
shop, many of whom became lifelong friends.
Mrs. Slater is survived by her son, Thomas Slater and wife LouAnn of Shelbyville,
TN., grandson Charles Slater and wife Autumn of Poplarville, MS, grandson
Matthew Slater and husband William of San Diego, CA; great-grandchildren
Ashlee Slater, Colton Slater, Eva Slater, Julian Slater, and Tristan Slater; and great-
great-grandchildren Oliver Lee, McKinley Slater, and Isabelle Slater.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Slater, her brother, Charles Bradbury, her
daughter Terry Slater, and her granddaughter April Slater.
Visitation will be held 1-2 pm Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Welch Funeral
Home in Starkville, with the funeral service immediately following at 2 pm in the
funeral home chapel. Rev. Jim Genesse will officiate. Dress is casual.
