James Edward “Ed” Lowe, 65, of Oxford, Mississippi, died Sunday, December 18, 2022, after a long fight with cancer. The funeral will be Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Pastor Mozart Dor and Rev. Buster Wilson officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 12:00 noon in West Hall at Waller Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.
Ed was born December 4, 1957, in Clarksdale, Mississippi the second of four children to the late William Lacey and Louise Jones Lowe. He grew up in Glendora and attended Sumner Elementary and graduated from Pillow Academy in Greenwood where he was recently inducted into the Pillow Academy Sports Hall of Fame. He attended the University of Mississippi where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After attending college, he farmed on the family farm but then moved to Oxford where he was employed by The University of Mississippi. He attended the Oasis Church of All Nations.
It has been said that Ed never met a stranger. He was known for his dry humor and his willingness to help anyone who needed it. Ed had a love for being outdoors and spending time with his wife, Rebecca and their dog, Oreo. They spent their time camping, traveling and on the water. They made many cross-country road trips, exploring new places and enjoying each other’s company. Ed was employed at The University of Mississippi where he was the principal Horticulturist at the National Center for Natural Product Research.
His survivors include his wife, Rebecca and his siblings and their families: William Lacey Lowe, Jr. (Nena) of Tupelo, MS; David Lowe (Laura) of Memphis, TN; May Lowe East (Barry) of Brandon, MS and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a special fund created in Ed’s memory to assist people with hearing loss and communicative disorders, The James E. Lowe Fund at The University of Mississippi Foundation, 406 University Avenue, Oxford, MS 38655.
