Fannie Ruth Hitt Dembowski
Tupelo- Fannie Ruth Hitt Dembowski was born in Ellistown Community of Union County, MS on February 4, 1927, to Lonnie E. and Callie Dye Hitt. She passed from this life at Avon lea Assisted Living, Tupelo, MS on January 19, 2023.
After graduating Sherman High School and Ole Miss, she taught and coached girls’ basketball in Lee County. While still in her early twenties, Fannie moved to Memphis, TN for employment. She worked at the U.S. Army Depot located there for a time. It was during that time she met and married Michael Dembowski. They later transferred to Red Stone Arsenal, Huntsville, AL where they worked several years before transferring to Washington, D.C. in the 1960s. She worked about 20 years at the Pentagon. They relocated back to Huntsville upon retirement from government work in the mid-1980s. Following her first retirement, Fannie acquired her Real Estate license. She owned and ran her own successful business. During her second career, which spanned more than 20 years, she received notable recognitions, among which were the status of “Multi-Million-Dollar Producer” and “Who’s Who Among American Women.” During her lifetime, Fannie Ruth traveled to interesting, worldwide destinations, both with her work as well as for personal travel. She was an avid Bridge player, successfully competing in tournaments all over the country, and she eventually attained “Life-Master Bridge” status. She had a wealth of knowledge, staying abreast of current events until days before her passing, and was an interesting conversationalist.
Fannie Ruth remained in Huntsville, living independently, until the beginning of 2022 when she began experiencing health issues. She moved to Avonlea in Tupelo May 3, 2022.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is pre-deceased by her sister Vera Hitt McDonald and husband, Clyde, and their son-in-law, J.D. Young; her brothers, Edward Hitt and Audie Hitt and wife, Vance. Survivors include nieces Janice Young, Bobbye Bolling (Milt); nephews Alan Hitt (Barbara), Randy Hitt (Wilma), Pat Hitt, and Eddie Hitt (Mary Ann); and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be at Ellistown Baptist Church Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023. Waters Funeral Home of Baldwyn is assisting the family with arrangements, however, no visitation at the funeral home.
