Sharon Lee Mayer Fly, 76, of Starkville, MS, passed away July 26, 2023, in the hospital in Tupelo, MS, from lung cancer. She was born February 14, 1947, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late Theodore Hart Mayer and the late Mary Virginia Robertson Mayer.
She graduated from high school at Little Rock Central High (1965), and she was proud to have been the captain of the Hi-Steppers her senior year. She graduated from college at Mississippi University for Women (1969).
One day after graduating from college, she married Jerry Fly on June 2, 1969, in the chapel on the campus at the “W”. They subsequently lived in Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama, and Georgia before returning to Mississippi in July, 2017, and while in Kentucky and Georgia Sharon was a public school teacher. She added a master’s degree in education from Georgia College & State University while in Georgia and finished her career as a middle school Media Specialist.
Sharon enjoyed her family, friends, animals, gardening, and the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church in Starkville.
She was preceded in death by her older brother Theodore Mayer and her older sister Patsy Lehman (Dave).
Sharon is survived by her husband, Jerry of Starkville, her younger sister Kathy Hayes (Hoyt) of Jackson, TN, the aforementioned Dave Lehman of Denver, CO, three nephews, a niece, three great nephews, and two great nieces. Nephew Christopher Mayer lives in Houston, TX. Nephews Brad Hayes and Josh Hayes live in Jackson, TN. Brad and Melissa Morrison Hayes are the parents of Hart and Poppy. Josh and Betsy Abbott Hayes are the parents of Ava, Henry, and Abbott. Niece Lisa Lehman lives in Denver CO. Sharon really loved her family!
Her friends should know that she cherished you and your encouragement, cards, calls, texts, and concern for me, Jerry, during the illness.
A private family memorial will take place in Jackson, TN, sometime in the future. Friends are encouraged to have memorial beverage hours at independently determined times and places.
