Starkville, MS – Dr. Jackie Wayne Carroll, 84, passed away on October 5, 2024, peacefully at home in Starkville, MS, surrounded by the love of his family.
Jack was born in Bessemer, AL, and was a graduate of McAdory High School of McCalla, AL. He attended Birmingham-Southern College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He earned his master’s degree in biology and his Ph.D. in cell physiology and biochemistry at The University of Alabama. During his postdoctoral work, he lived in New York, where he worked at Sloan Kettering doing research on Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. During his career, he worked at Mississippi State University in various roles including environmental specialist and associate professor, among others, always having a love of chemistry. After his retirement in 1996, his love of travel, MSU baseball, practical jokes, and most of all, the love of his family prevailed.
He is survived by his wife and high-school sweetheart, Charleen, to whom he was married for 62 wonderful years; his son, William “Bubba” Carroll (Karen) of Birmingham, AL; his daughter, Tonia Carroll-Davis (Dale) of Eupora, MS; beloved granddaughter, Anastasia Warren (Harrison) of Vicksburg, MS; sister-in-law, Martha Carroll of New Market, AL; brother-in-law, Charles “Buddy” Ramey, Jr. (Betty) of McCalla, AL, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The celebration of Jack’s life will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, October 12th, 2024, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 820 Evergreen, Starkville, MS. Graveside services will be held at Valhalla Cemetery in Birmingham, AL, on Saturday, October 19th.
