Joseph Wright “J.W.” Moore

Mr. Joseph Wright “J.W.” Moore, 97, died Friday, January 3, 2025, at his son’s home in Etta, MS. The funeral service will be Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. at Philadelphia Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Irvin officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 12:00 noon at the church. Burial will follow in Philadelphia Cemetery.

Mr. Moore was born on September 4, 1927, in Lafayette County, MS to the late Orby Prentiss and Birdye Mae Moore. He was a lifelong resident of Lafayette County, a longtime and active member of Philadelphia Baptist Church and a Mason with the Rocky Ford Masonic Lodge. He spent his early career as a carpenter building homes before moving on to farming. When he wasn’t working, his family and friends knew that they could find him in his deer stand or down by his pond fishing. He very much enjoyed cooking and putting up the vegetables he grew in his garden, never without a stash in the freezer. The fried catfish from J.W.’s kitchen could rival most restaurants! Above all, his family and friends were the most important part of his life, and they all will miss his unwavering love for each of them. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lane Moody Moore; four sisters, Waurine Urbanek, Helen Rogers, Robbie Ash and Mattie Nell Morton and a brother, Roselle Moore.

Mr. Moore is survived by his son, Terry Moore and his wife, Rebecca of Etta, MS; two sisters, Jean Spence of Myrtle, MS and Ruby Bennett of Oxford; two grandchildren, Mark Moore and his wife, Kourtney and Tiffany Sanders and her husband, Brent; three great-grandchildren, Dalton Moore, Braxton Moore and Emma Lane Sanders as well as one great-great-grandchild, Dallas Moore.
