Anthony Bruce Dodgen, known as Tony to most and Bruce to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2025. Born on March 3, 1952, in Biloxi, Mississippi, Tony lived a life devoted to family, education, and tennis.
Raised in Jackson, Tony graduated from Wingfield High School in 1970; attended Mississippi State University, received his undergraduate degree from University of Southern Mississippi and a Masters in Mathematics Education from Mississippi College. A gifted teacher and coach, he spent a decade at Chamberlain Hunt Academy and seven years at St. Aloysius High School, leading his teams to numerous state championships.
In 1996, Tony became the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Head Coach at Alcorn State University, where he led his teams to 12 SWAC Championships and 18 finals appearances over 21 years. A 16-time SWAC Tennis Coach of the Year, Tony created a family-like environment for his players, mentoring many international students and welcoming them into his home.
Tony’s faith and service extended beyond the court. He was a member of the Port Gibson United Methodist Church, past president of the Lions Club, and a dedicated community volunteer. Tony enjoyed many years hunting and fishing with his buddies and was a true artist in woodworking, leather and beads.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Catherine Hatch Dodgen; his children, Ashley Freeman and Cass Dodgen, his wife Paige, and grandchildren Lucy Catherine, Carr, Anna James and Peyton Bee.
A private celebration of Tony’s life will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Show Mercy International, P.O. Box 1009, Port Gibson, MS 39150
