Dr. Kimla Channie Wilkins-Johnson, Esq. transitioned on August 28, 2017. She is survived by two children: Zachary and Xavier Johnson, who both attended Okolona, Nettleton and Tupelo Public Schools; a grandson – Ezra Murphy; Sisters – Michelle Wilkins, Rita Matthews, Jennifer White and Lea Thomas; and former spouse, Oliver W. Johnson, III, of Okolona, and many other relatives.
She was predeceased by her father, Robert Wilkins and mother, Betty Jo Murray. After graduating from Walbrook High School in Baltimore, Kimla received two B.A. degrees from Yale University, two Masters degrees from Princeton University, and her J.D. degree from Columbia University in New York City.
After passing numerous Bar exams, she became licensed in D.C., CT, MD, SC, and DE. Kimla held positions as a Federal Law Clerk, College Professor, and a Congressional Staffer and practiced law for over 30 years. Locally, Attorney Johnson practiced for both The Mayfield Firm and Jim Waide & Associates of Tupelo, MS.
Her passions included Law, Literature, Arts & Crafts, Sewing, Board Games, Dominoes "Bones", Theatre, Camping, Crossword Puzzles, Decorating, Dancing and leading GSA Troops. Funeral home services were entrusted to Fields Funeral Home of Okolona, MS. Her memorial service was held on her Birthday – Monday, October 2, 2017 at the March Life Tribute Center at 5616 Old Court Road, Windsor Mill, Maryland (Exit 18 off I-695) at 11:00 a.m. Flowers and/or gifts can be sent to this location.
