Betty Haley

April 1, 1930 ~ July 13, 2020

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

My mom, Betty Nelson Walters Haley, 90 years young, died peacefully Monday, July 13, 2020.

Born in LaFollette, TN to the late William Henderson and Ethel Kizzie (Parrott) Nelson, she was the second youngest of 10 children.

Betty married Joe Parks Walters of LaFollette TN in 1950. They enjoyed traveling, going to UT football games, entertaining, and raising a family. After Joe passed away, Betty was a single mom during which time she worked at Exxon Corporation in Memphis, TN. In 1980 she married Rex Haley. Upon retirement they made their home in Hernando, MS where Mom enjoyed hosting family gatherings, feeding the birds and teaching the grandkids to fish. She planted many, many azaleas, dogwoods and other plants all throughout their beautiful property. Mom also loved daily walks which she continued to do right up until this year.

After Rex’s death, Mom moved to Wesley Meadows in Hernando MS where she lived for the last 8 years. There she continued her flower gardening and bird feeding. And even better, made many dear friends. Mom enjoyed playing games every afternoon, reading and playing on her computer. And she never missed a UT football game on tv.

Mom instilled in us an appreciation of nature, the joy of laughter, the reward of reading a good book, the importance of being kind to others, and most importantly the love of the Lord. Her blended family includes children Anne Walters Mathis (husband, Randy), Susan Elizabeth Walters, Debbie Haley Jackson (husband Keith), David Haley and Mike Haley. As well as grandchildren, Jason Haley, Scott Haley, Joey Haley, Melissa Molina, Jennifer Berkowitz, Steve Seawright, Pam Seawright and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her sister Dean Brison lives in Sauk Village, IL.  Siblings now deceased are sisters, Willie, Reba, Hazel, Nelle and Faetta as well as three brothers, Ira, Floyd and Chuck.

Memorial contributions in Betty’s memory may be made to Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, MS (5159 Main St.) where a special thanks goes out for the amazing care and kindness she received there. Or to Baker’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Hernando, MS (1965 Johnston Rd.) where she was a member. The family is planning a memorial service for a later date.
