Delbert Coy McCullar

Nettleton – Delbert Coy McCullar, 78, passed away at his residence in Nettleton, MS, on Saturday, September 6, 2020. Born on December 13, 1941, in the Bigbee Community, Delbert was the son of the late Paul McCullar and Willie Mae Kennedy McCullar Allen.

Delbert grew up in a large family, having a total of 12 brothers and sisters. To help provide for his family, he learned early the value of hard work. Delbert worked in the gravel industry, with over 60 years of service, he worked at Amory gravel as a pump operator. He loved the outdoors and never shied away from any type of hard work. He worked alongside Troy McCullar, his nephew, and they made many memories over the years. He married the love of his life, Tollie Johnson McCullar on August 23, 1968 and for over 45 years they built a happy home with children and grandchildren.

Delbert was a member of the former First Freewill Baptist Church and he served on the Board. He lived out his faith be loving and caring for his family and friends. He was a folk teller and he always had interesting stories to tell so that all stayed entertained while he was around. Delbert was fascinated with the 6” punch and he often joked he had mastered it. He loved being around others and he especially enjoyed special times with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a great man, a hard worker and awesome father. His family is saddened with their loss yet they know that he is with is Savior face to face. He will be missed greatly yet the memories made with him will live on with his family and friends.

He is survived by a daughter, Debra Jean Higgins, Nettlteon; son, Michail Wayne Abbott, Amory; 9 grandchildren, Alisha Britt, Amanda Caldwell, Jamie Abbott, Ashley Abbott, Candace Miller, Eric Abbott, Brandon Abbott, Sarah Abbott, and Kade Abbott; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Hall, Nettleton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Tollie Ray Johnson McCullar; a son, Randy Abbott; 11 brothers and sisters.

A Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2020, at 10:30 am at Wofford Cemetery, Sulligent/Vernon, Alabama, with Reverend Joseph Kennedy officiating. Pallbearers will be Jacob Abbott, Andrew Palmer, Jordan Smith, Garrett Smith, Kade Abbott, and Jason Smith.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory, on Wednesday evening from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Please observe Covid-19 recommendations on social distancing and wear a mask to all events.
