Mr. Joseph Thomas “Tommy” Bowen, 65, died Friday, July 14, 2023, at his home in Oxford, MS. The funeral will be Monday, July 17, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Bro. Jay Derryberry officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 16, 2023, from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. in West Hall of Waller Funeral Home.

Tommy was born on November 17, 1957, to the late Thomas Carey and Ruth Longest Bowen. A graduate of South Pontotoc Attendance Center, he continued his education at The University of Mississippi, earning his Bachelor’s of Science in Geological Engineering in 1980. Tommy retired from Roseburg Forest Products and American Furniture. A faithful member of Bay Springs Baptist Church of Abbeville, MS, he held a strong devotion to Jesus, knowing without a doubt that he was the Lord and Savior of his life. Tommy led by example, making sure his family also kept God at the center of their lives. With an impressive skill for building, he loved days spent in the shop, whether fixing something broken or building something new from scratch. He was deeply proud of his house that he built, sawing every log himself. A true labor of love, Tommy knew that he was not just building a house, but a home for his family that he loved so much. A loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, his family was the motivation for all of his hard work in life. Time spent with them brought him the greatest joy in the world. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tommy is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sandy Jones Bowen of Oxford, MS; daughter, Jennifer Bowen Hamilton and her husband, Jedd of Oxford, MS; son, Joshua Thomas Bowen and his wife, Virginia of Madison, MS; sister, Penny Cermack of Pontotoc, MS; brothers, Tony Bowen and his wife, Helen of Pontotoc, MS and Tim Bowen of Pontotoc, MS; three beloved grandchildren, Alex Webb Hamilton, Kara Beth Bowen, and Madeline Ruth Bowen; and his special mother-in-law, Rose McLarty Jones of Oxford, MS.

Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Tommy’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online at st.jude.org.
