Dewey Murphree went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 01, 2023. He was born on September 23, 1928, to Edgar Floyd Murphree and Virgie Ero Adams Murphree in a log cabin in Mount Moriah, Mississippi.
He accepted Christ and was baptized in a pond near Mount Moriah Baptist Church when he was young. He attended Bruce High School. He married Garneita Fay Bryant on February 04, 1950. They were married in her home in Old Town by her brother, Rev. Herman Bryant. They celebrated their 73rd anniversary in February 2023. They farmed for a couple of years in the Old Town area and then moved to Memphis TN. He drove a bus for Memphis Transit Authority back when they were running electric buses on overhead rails. He drove a truck for Chambers Gas Company and Viking/Spector truck lines for a number of years. He loved working on old tractors and automobiles. He loved flying small aircraft and owned and flew a couple of Cessna 150s from his airstrip that he built in Independence, Mississippi in the 1970s. He was a great mechanic, carpenter, electrician, welder, and plumber. He could fix about anything. Dewey was a member of Old Town Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Garneita Fay Bryant Murphree, son Larry Wayne Murphree; granddaughter Christian Lee Murphree; father Edger Floyd Murphree; mom Virgie Ero Adams Murphree; his brother, Fred Harold Murphree; brother-in-law, Sylvester Johnson; infant brother Prentice Harmon Murphree and infant sister, Carol Jean Murphree. He was also preceded in death by numerous Bryant brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is survived by his sister Dorothy Johnson; sister in law Marie Bryant Bloodworth; nieces, Bobbie Jane Bingham (Robert) and Betty Sue Watson; son Kenneth Murphree (Beverly); daughter Kay McElhaney (Glenn); grandson Michael Guy and granddaughter Megann Jenkins (Zach); great grandchildren: Nathan, Macy, and Luke Jenkins. Great grandson, Scotty Wayne Murphree.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The Gideons International Organization to purchase Bibles.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 04, 2023, from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce. The service honoring Dewey's life will take place on Friday, August 04, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce with Rev. Greg Hurt of Highland Baptist Church Senatobia,MS officiating. Special music son, Kenneth Murphree. Steve Bryant, Rex Evans, Michael Guy, Zach Jenkins, Glenn McElhaney, and Ralph Nabors will carry Dewey to rest in Bruce Cemetery.
