Oscar Lee Buchanan

Saltillo- Oscar Lee Buchanan – With a broken and heavy heart, we announce that Oscar Lee Buchanan passed away at age 89, on August 3, 2023, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in New Albany. He was born March 25, 1934, in Guntown, Mississippi. He was the son of Millie Mae Hefner and Robert Lee Buchanan. He was a man who loved and was devoted to God spending time, energy and his talents with his beloved home congregation, Mayfield Church of Christ. His first love was Eva, his wife. He once said that the time apart they spend while in the Navy, meant that each time they came back together was like another honeymoon. After his retirement from the Navy, his focus became her in-so-much that when you saw Oscar you saw Eva. He served 20 years in the United States Navy, enlisting on August 28, 1952, and departing from service November 1, 1972. He served on numerous ships and Naval Stations throughout the Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. While serving he earned numerous Commendations from Presidential Citations, Mobile Riverine Force Meritorious Commendations, to the Gallantry Cross. Later he worked for the Wonder Bread Company, or as he called it the “Twinkie Company” retiring from “Twinkie” in the late 1980’s. He and Eva spent the next few years traveling the United States and Canada in their camper, another extended honeymoon allowing them to fall deeper in love and devotion to each other. For everyone who knew him, he was extremely fun, mischievous, and loved talking about God. His life was a loving influence on everyone he met.

A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, August 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn Mississippi with Bro. Adam Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Mayfield Church of Christ Cemetery.
