Curtis was born on February 18, 1944, in Three Mile, West Virginia, to the late Gracie Mae Young and James Otho Phillips. A veteran of the United States Army, he bravely served his country for three years. He retired from Winchester Ammunition, where he worked for 53 years. He married his wife, Maria, on July 7, 1967, and together they shared 57 years of marriage and raised two sons. While living in Moro, Illinois, the family were members of Macedonia Baptist Church, where Curtis served in various capacities, doing everything from lawn work to preaching. After moving to Oxford, Mississippi, he attended College Hill Heights Baptist Church, bringing with him the same willingness to serve. When his boys were young, he took great pride in coaching their soccer teams and watching them excel at the sport. Curtis enjoyed cheering on the Ole Miss Rebels, but also held a devotion for his home state’s West Virginia Mountaineers. Above all, he was a devoted and loving husband and father. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Clinton L. Phillips.
Curtis is survived by his beloved wife, Maria L. Phillips of Oxford, MS; son, James L. Phillips and his wife, Tasha, of Clive, Iowa; and two grandchildren, Rio and Vida Phillips.
Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Curtis’ memory may be made to College Hill Heights Baptist Church, 147 County Road 102, Oxford, Mississippi 38655.
