Lester Allen Barrios

July 21, 1960 ~ March 5, 2020

Mr. Lester Allen Barrios, 59, died Thursday, March 5, 2020, at the Mississippi State Veteran’s Affair Home surrounded by his family.  Visitation will be held Monday, March 9, 2020, from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at Waller Funeral Home.

Mr. Barrios was a 1980 graduate of Lafayette High School and attended Northwest Community College for two years on a baseball scholarship before returning to Oxford to attend Ole Miss. In 1982, with a guaranteed Navy Seal Bud/S seat, he began basic training with the United State Navy.  Before entering the program, he developed his own strenuous training regimen that included running from his dad’s Chevron station on Jackson Avenue to Brown’s Lake on Highway 7 and swimming laps.  He continued running to his dad’s home only to eat, shower and change clothes before running all the way back to the Chevron station to work his shift.  His miles totaled over 18 daily.  As expected, he excelled during BUD/S training and went on to serve as a Navy Seal until his retirement in December 2002. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and relaxing while watching sports. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Barrios.

Survivors include his daughter, Dana Barrios-Moltmaker and her husband, Joseph of Jacksonville, NC; a son, Kurt Johnson of Phoenix, AZ; his father, Dale Barrios of Oxford; one sister, Cheri Barrios McManus and her husband, Sid of Oxford, MS; one grandchild, Paisley Moltmaker; his former wife, Kathy Barrios and a good buddy that loved him as a brother, Cole Hughes.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Barrios’ memory may be made to MS State VA Home, 120 Veterans Drive, Oxford, MS 38655.

In honor or Mr. Barrios’ service to his country, the flag of the United States Navy will be flown at Waller Funeral Home.
