Smithville – Gregory “Greg” Alan Coker, Sr., passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, in Monroe County, Mississippi. Born on August 15, 1960, in Memphis, TN, he was the son of Virginia Frances Jernigan Coker and the late Connie Reed Coker.
Greg grew up in a large family in Monroe County and graduated from Smithville High School with the class of 1979. He married the love of his life, Katrina “Tina” Nigail Coker on August 28, 1981 and together they were blessed with two children. He was a good provider for his family, having worked for FFM, Inc. in Amory, MS, as a forklift driver for over 17 years. Greg won a service award for his dedicated years of service at FFM. He was also a patriot, serving in the Mississippi National Guard for 12 years.
He was Baptist and loving his family and grandchildren was what gave him the most joy in life. Greg was passionate about being with his family and he was always laid back. He was a jokester, often called the nickname “Chief”. His family said he loved to hug and always had a smile for you. Some of his close friends were Jimmy Murphey and Randy Hathcock and they often had fun talking about good times together. Greg loved 70’s and Classic Rock and Roll music. In his free time, he liked to be outdoors, fishing, working in the yard, or just spending time with family.
Greg was a great provider, father, and he was a joy to be around. His family and friends will miss him dearly and they will always treasure all the great memories made with him.
Greg is survived by his daughter, Courtney Paige Harper, Smithville; son, Gregory Alan Coker, Jr. (Nikki), Smithville; mother, Virginia Frances Coker; grandchildren, Hayden Harper, Logan Coker, Connor Coker, Bella Coker, Chloee Gatewood, Shealee House, Aliyah Greathouse, Major Greathouse, and Amaya Greathouse; sister, Joyce McGuire (Billy), Wynee, AR; brothers, Woodie Coker, Jamie Coker (Denni), Billy Coker (Melissa); brother-in-law, Phillip “Chop” Hathcock; a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katrina “Tina” Nigail Coker; nephew, Billy Coker, Jr., and father-in-law, Edison “Pork Chop” Hathcock.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at 11:00 am at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, with Bro. Wes White officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery, Hatley, MS. Pallbearers will be Richard Box, Terry “PeeWee” Allred, Phillip “Chop” Hathcock, A.J. Murphy, Eric Coker, and Chris Hathcock. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jimmy Murphy and Steve Miller.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday evening, June 29, 2020, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home in Amory.
