Obituary (A Life Well Lived)

Collice (Doc) Ewing was the youngest son of four children born to the late Idella (Ma Della) Ewing and Phelix Ewing. He was born September 5, 1934 in Aberdeen Mississippi. He departed this life on Monday afternoon February 1, 2021 at Tupelo hospital in Tupelo Mississippi at the age of 86.

Doc confessed a hope in Christ at an early age at Daniel Baptist Missionary Baptist Church in Aberdeen, Mississippi; where he was baptized. He was outgoing and competitive; as a youth and adult loved sports, especially shooting pool and baseball. Also, Fishing became one of his favorite pass time sports. He left Aberdeen, MS to pursue a new job path away from farming; although cautioned by others that he would not make it without farming. He learned many life lessons and proved them wrong. Doc moved to Tupelo, MS and found work in factories/plants. He learned the trade and plant culture; he retired as a longtime dedicated and resourceful plant worker and eventual Team leader. He later learned and confessed that “God’s grace, love, and mercy” was always with him. At an older age, he came to know the Lord in a personal way; it was as if he had found gold or oil. He was excited and passionate about God and the Bible. Because salvation and a personal relationship with God is precious; greater than gold or oil.

He was united into marriage to Gwendolyn Ewing; they each brought children into the union. They had a blended family; but Gwen remembers him often saying, “he had no stepchildren, but only children.” His late first wife Maxine Ewing bore to them one son; Phil Ewing. He left a rich legacy to all nine children to forever cherish and learn from. As much as sports was his hobby and pleasure; working hard and diligently was his life pursuit; often maintaining two or three jobs at a time. Doc loved to talk and enter-act with people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs. He often said what he meant and meant what he said; but that was “Our Doc.” He wasn’t perfect; but then who is? only our risen Lord and Savior. Our perfection and completeness are in our belief in Christ Jesus; thank God for Jesus!

Doc loved his wife Gwen; and she loved him. His wife Gwen’s dedication and commitment were demonstrated in her actions each day. He often said to his daughter Hazel, “Gwen takes good care of me;” and so she did all the time. Doc loved his children and entire family; they all loved him dearly in return. And he loved his church family and Pastor; they loved him also. When he joined Second Baptist M.B. Church under Pastor Larry Stone’s leadership; he hit the ground running as though trying to make up for lost time in serving and getting to know our God. Serving in the church; going to Sunday School; the men brotherhood class; and Oh yes, ushering in church was the joy of his life. He found purpose and God’s plan for his life; he found joy!

Collice (Doc) was preceded in death by his mother, father, two brothers and one sister; Idella Ewing, Phelix Ewing, Wille Clay, Ira Clay, and Cassie Nathan.

He leaves to cherish his memory: His wife Gwendolyn Ewing; Nine children, Hazel Devould (Memphis, TN), Phil Ewing, Wesley Ashby, Jane Ashby, Monica Taylor, Mario Taylor (Janet), Demarco Ewing, Maurice Roger, and Mike Roger; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, close friends, and church family members.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, and I have kept the faith:” II Timothy 4:7
