Samuel Jefferson Moore

Samuel (Sammy) Jefferson Moore, 83, departed this life peacefully on November 16, 2021, at Sycamore Place Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

Sammy was born in Amory, Mississippi, on August 4, 1938, to John and Mary Patton Moore. He grew up in Amory and graduated from Amory High School in 1956. While attending high school, Sammy excelled in tennis, and met and married the love of his life, Charlotte Ann Owings. They were blessed with 63 wonderful years of marriage. After high school, Sammy went to work as an Engineer for the Frisco railroad, which later became Burlington Northern. Sammy continued to work for the railroad until he retired in July of 2000. Once married, Sammy and Charlotte moved to Memphis, and later to Olive Branch, Mississippi, where they put down permanent roots. He was a longtime member of Gracewood Baptist Church, and he loved serving in the nursery. He was happiest being at home with his family and spending time outdoors.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlotte Owings Moore; one son, Samuel Jefferson Moore, Jr. (Carole) of Olive Branch; one daughter, Pamela Moore Pitts (John), from Olive Branch; six grandchildren, Brian Breakstone, John Pitts, Brooke Edgin (Jordan), Hope Moore, Grace Moore, Faith Moore; and two great- grandchildren, Rylee and Sofia Edgin.

The family will be receiving relatives and friends for a visitation, Friday, November 19, 2021, from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM, at Gracewood Baptist Church (8551 Getwell Road, Southaven, MS 38671). The burial and graveside services will take place on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 12:00 PM, at the Amory Masonic Cemetery (1212 A Ave., Amory, MS 38821).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Gracewood Baptist Church.
