Dave Joseph Sherman

Dave J. Sherman, Jr., passed away at his home in Oxford, Mississippi, on January 27, 2022, at the age of 96. Dave was preceded in death by his wife Sara Sarullo Sherman in 2013, and his grandson Joel Lee in 2008. Dave is also preceded in death by his sister Lilly Ellis and his brothers, Floyd, Mershell, George, Charles and Joe Sherman. Dave is survived by his five children and their spouses, David and Teresa Lee of Carlisle, Arkansas, Dave and Teresa Sherman of Tyler, Texas, Peter and Patti Sherman of Natchez, Mississippi, Pat and Frances Hare of Aiken, South Carolina, and Paul and Patty Sherman of Chandler, Arizona. Dave is also survived by his fifteen grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild that were the loves of his life.

Dave Sherman was born in Greenville, Mississippi, to Dave and Affifi Sherman on November 21, 1925. He attended Greenville Public Schools and was president of his Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes. He was quarterback of the Greenville Hornets football team and also played basketball.

In business Dave was most known as a co-founder of Greenville Lumber Company (The Big G) along with his father-in-law, Pete Sarullo. As an industry leader Dave served as president of the Greenville Home Builders Association, president of the Mississippi Home Builders Association, director of the National Association of Home Builders and chairman of Allied Building Stores. In 2014 Dave was inducted into the Mississippi Home Builders Hall of Fame.

Dave served as president of many civic organizations including The Boys and Girls Club of Greenville, the Rotary Club, the Greenville Industrial Foundation and served many roles at St. Joseph’s Church in Greenville. He served as a Man of Mississippi for Governor John Bell Williams in 1968. After moving to Oxford, Mississippi, he founded Security Self Storage and was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church. Dave loved all sports but especially Mississippi State football. Dave was most happy when he was serving the Lord by serving others. He did this by baking and delivering pizzas and his famous bread, wood working, growing vegetables, volunteering at Baptist Hospital and mentoring.

Family will receive friends at St. John’s Catholic Church in Oxford on Friday, February 4, 2022, at 10:00 followed by a funeral mass at 10:30. A graveside service will be held at the Greenville Cemetery in Greenville, Mississippi, at 2:00.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to St. John’s Catholic Church, Oxford, Mississippi.
