Larry D. Mayo was born on February 26, 1949, in New Albany, MS to Carl Mayo and Mary Katharine Burke.
Larry moved from New Albany at age 6 and resided mostly in Key West, FL until joining the Navy in 1968. He served 2 years at Whiting Field NAS in Milton, FL, and 2 years on the USS Lexington. In 1972, after serving our country, he was employed with Southern Bell Telephone Co. in Milton, FL.
Larry was a 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and a member of Pace Lodge 349. In 1988, he returned to New Albany and operated his business, Mayo Trucking. Larry retired in 2008.
He enjoyed drag racing and riding motorcycles. Most of all he enjoyed telling funny crazy stories and pulling pranks. He always had a smile for everyone.
He is survived by his wife Margaret Nelson Mayo of 35 years; two daughters Katharine (Josh) Galloway of New Bern, NC, and Tiffany Johnson (Richard Moran) of Murfreesboro, TN; a sister Linda Davis (William) of New Albany; two grandchildren Julia Ensley and Daxston Galloway of New Bern, NC; a sister-in-law, Betty Evers (Norman) of Milton, FL and several nieces and nephews.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents Carl Mayo and Mary Katharine Burke; a son Larry Darden Mayo, Jr; a brother Norris Wayne Mayo; a sister Marjorie Dillard.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 13, 2022 from 12:00p.m. until funeral service time at 2:00p.m. at United Funeral Service. Bro. Marty Merritt and Bro. Don Shaffer will officiate.
