Dr. John Purves McLaurin, Jr., 99, died Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi. The funeral will be Sunday, June 26, 2022, at 3:00 P.M. at Oxford – University United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris McAlilly and Rev. Warren Black officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 25, 2022, from 12:00 noon until 2:00 P.M. at the church and again Sunday from 2:00 until the time of service. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.

Dr. McLaurin was born May 14, 1923, in Burdette, AR to the late John Purves and Emma Lois McLaurin, and grew up in Merigold, MS. He joined the Army in 1942, serving as Captain in World War II. During his time in the service, he attended The University of Mississippi Medical School, where he met his dear wife, Eugenia. Dr. McLaurin then transferred to The University of Pennsylvania where he completed his studies and went on to serve a stint in the Army before moving to New Orleans, LA in 1952, to practice with Dr. E.L. King and his dear friend, Dr. John King. In 1956, he returned to Oxford to open his own OB-GYN medical practice, and later founded the Women’s Clinic, which is presently known as the Oxford Clinic for Women. Passionate about medicine, Dr. McLaurin not only served the Oxford community, but also held a seat on the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure. He was a beloved member of Oxford – University United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, and an Alderman for the City of Oxford for 16 years. In addition to his parents, Dr. McLaurin was preceded in death by his wife, Eugenia Bramlett McLaurin.

Dr. McLaurin is survived by his sons, John Purves McLaurin III and his wife, Carol of Texas City, TX, Eugene Bramlett McLaurin of Savannah, GA, Robert Carter McLaurin of Oxford, MS, James Reagan McLaurin and his wife, Net of Thailand, Walter Robyn McLaurin of Oxford, MS, Timothy Steidley McLaurin of Gainesville, FL, and David Brian McLaurin and his fiancé, Teresa Hewlett of Taylor, MS; 12 grandchildren, Bramlett Myers and her husband, Austen, Dave McLaurin, Meredith McLaurin, Brianna Adams and her husband, Justin, Chris McLaurin and his wife, Alyce, Melanie Ford and her husband, Cameron, Melissa Thompson and her husband, Stan Coggins, Holly DeShazo and her husband, Matthew, Brian McLaurin, Jody Delaney and husband, Ryan, Stacy Small and her husband, Pete, and James Reagan McLaurin, Jr. ; and 20 great-grandchildren, Kenley Myers, Easton Adams, Weston Adams, Colleen McLaurin, Meg McLaurin, Cadi McLaurin, Wesley McLaurin, Rhyan Ford, Mollianne Ford, Minnie Rae Ford, Reaves Stillwell, Brooke McCracken, Callie Coggins, Laney DeShazo, Denson DeShazo, John Delaney, Egan Delaney, Maggie Delaney, Clara Small and Elena Small.
