Halbert Lee Bishop

Pratt- Halbert Lee (H.L.) Bishop, 95, died December 13, 2022, at Lakeview Place at Countrywood Manor in Mantachie, MS. He was born June 26, 1927, in Baldwyn, MS to Luther and Lela Johnston Bishop. He was a graduate of Baldwyn High School. He was a lifetime resident of the Pratt community. He worked as a heavy equipment operator who was known widely in the community for his work, one special memory being his working on the building of the Natchez Trace. He ultimately started his own bulldozer business where he did bulldozer work in the area, one special memory being his building the Sportsman Lake at Guntown, MS. Later, he served Lee County as District I Supervisor. All the while he worked his farm and raised cattle until his retirement. After retiring, he enjoyed working around the homeplace, breakfast at Agnew’s with his friends, and helping neighbors any way he could.

He married Mattie Ruth (Golden) Grissom on December 27, 1945. They were married until her death in August of 2010. He is survived by his children: Danny Bishop (Patsy) of Baldwyn, Kenneth Bishop (Patricia) of Fulton, Karen Davis (Johnny) of Baldwyn. He is survived by his grandchildren David Bishop (Amy) of New Albany, Chris Bishop (Andrea) of Orlando, FL, Lorie Mattox (Jason) of Kossuth, Kimberly Bishop of Nashville, TN, Bishop Davis (Kylie) of Oxford. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren: Madison Bishop, Bauer Bishop, Hannah Bishop, Nora Bishop, Lilly Bishop, Rob Richey, Lee-Anna Richey, and Taylor Bishop. Further, he is survived by four step great-grandchildren: Kate Easterling, Abby Mattox Cotham, Rachel Mattox, and Rebekah Mattox; and three great-great-grandchildren: Ezra, Everett, and Ada Easterling. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers (Orville Bishop, Horace Bishop, Ellis Wayne Bishop), an infant sister, one infant grandchild (John Dylan Davis), and one infant great-grandchild (Elizabeth Grace Richey).

He was a lifetime member of the Pratt Christian Church where he served as Elder, member of Church Board, church secretary-treasurer for many years, and assistant Sunday School teacher.

Services will be held at Waters Funeral Home, Baldwyn, MS on Thursday, December 15, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. when the service begins with Bro. Joe Caraway and Bro. Mark Davidson officiating. Burial will be in the Pratt Cemetery.

Pall bearers are David Bishop, Bishop Davis, Bauer Bishop, Rob Richey, Jason Mattox, and Larry McCarthy.
