Dr. Betty Malone Fulwood

Dr. Betty Malone Fulwood passed away peacefully during the night of Monday, April 3, 2023. She was 93 years old. The graveside service will be Saturday, April 8, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at Friendship Cemetery in Guntown, Mississippi with Rev. Forrest Sheffield officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, April 7, 2023, from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at Waller Funeral Home.

Raised in Guntown, Mississippi, Dr. Fulwood received her Bachelor’s Degree from Mississippi University for Women (then, MSCW), which she attended under a basketball scholarship. She received her Master’s Degree from Ole Miss, and her PhD from Oklahoma State University. She retired as a tenured professor from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. During her career she also served as an associate professor at Ole Miss and worked several years for Mississippi State Extension Service, in Tippah and Alcorn counties and later in Starkville. She was also active in the American Association of Interior Designers and for a time owned her own interior design business. She held a life-long appreciation for the value of education, which to her included extensive travel at home and abroad. She instilled a love of the same to her daughters.

She is survived by her brother, Charles Malone, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and her daughters, Renee Fulwood Cain (William “Weaver” Cain) of Water Valley, Mississippi, and Leigh Fulwood of Kirkland, Washington. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Fulwood; parents Hurley Ray and Mattie Malone; and a sister, Martha Jean Malone.

She was devoted to her students and to her several North Mississippi hometowns, including Guntown, Corinth and Oxford.
