Gay Maxwell Johnson

Guntown- Gay Maxwell Johnson, 88, passed from this life, Monday, May 8, 2023 at North MS Medical Center surrounded by family. She was born February 5, 1935 in Cherokee, AL to Cody and Pearl Reeves Maxwell. In May, 1952 she married James Thomas Johnson. She and Thomas celebrated 51 years of marriage prior to his death in 2003. She was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ. Gay was a 1953 graduate of Guntown High School. She worked in the furniture industry as a sewing room or quality control supervisor for over 40 years. She treasured her family, her church, her friends and took great care of those relationships. She loved the Lord and knew that Heaven awaited her at the end of this life.

Survivors include her children: Tom (Carol) Johnson of Franklin, TN; Billy Johnson of Baldwyn, MS; Johnny Johnson of Memphis, TN and Kim (Chad) Chapman of Memphis, TN. Her 8 grandchildren: Jennifer (Ben) Altom of Murfreesboro, TN, Stephanie (Dan) Shipp of Nashville, TN, Dustin (Sarah) Johnson of Jackson, TN, Cody (Telina) Johnson of Tupelo, MS, Johnna Johnson of Florence, AL, Chad Chapman, Jr of Memphis, TN, Cory (Emily) Chapman of Memphis, TN, Kayla (Cody) Young of Amory, MS; her 9 great-grandchildren: Millie Altom, Lucy Shipp, Hunter Johnson, Cooper Johnson, Vale Johnson, Thomas, Matthew & Luke Chapman and Tatum Young. Her sister, Joy Tapp of Baldwyn, MS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Jimmy Maxwell and her daughter in law, Metta Johnson.

A funeral to celebrate Gay’s life will be Sunday, May 14, 2023 at 2:30 p. m.at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn, MS with her son Tom Johnson and daughter, Kim Chapman officiating.

A visitation will be held before the service from noon until service time. Burial will be at Campbelltown Cemetery in Guntown, MS.
