Mary Scotte “Scottie” Knight was taken to be with her Lord on October 27th, 2023 at the age of 87. She was born on March 17th, 1936 in Tupelo, Mississippi to Scott and Mary Sue Wood and was raised in the Birmingham Ridge Community. She was a Tupelo junior high classmate of Elvis and graduated from Saltillo High School in 1954. She attended Millsaps College until she married her high school sweetheart, John Harold Knight. They recently celebrated 69 years of marriage.

She and Harold moved frequently while he served in the U.S. Air Force. Upon his honorable discharge, they moved to Starkville for him to attend MSU. While there, Scottie worked for the housing department in Lee Hall and earned what she called her PHT – “Putting Hubby Through”.

They lived in Decatur, Alabama for 16 years where they raised their 3 children. They were charter members of Covenant Presbyterian Church and developed many lifelong friendships there. They have had annual gatherings with their Covenant friends in Montreat, North Carolina for over 40 years calling themselves the “Over the Hill Gang”.

They have spent the last 32 years happily residing back in Starkville, actively participating at First Presbyterian Church, and enjoying all things MSU. Scottie loved to host tailgates with her children, grandchildren and as many friends as they wanted to bring along. Scottie enjoyed bowling and playing bridge in her younger years. She made her home a beautiful haven for her family and friends with her hospitality, decorating, and seamstress skills.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in-law, John Allen and Mary Sue Knight, her brothers, Joe and James Wood and her granddaughter, Maggie Knight. She is survived by her husband Harold, her children Gary (Kim) Knight, Lebanon OH, Sharon (Jim) Brown, Madison MS, and Allen (Debbie) Knight, Saltillo MS, 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

A funeral to celebrate Scottie’s life will be held on Thursday, November 2nd at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Starkville, MS. Visitation will be prior to the service at the church from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.

The family would like to especially thank the staff at The Blake at Township for their loving and compassionate care.
