Mrs. Linda Edwards Murphey, 76, of Oxford, Mississippi, passed away on Monday, April 7, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi, surrounded by her family. Private services will be held at a later date.
Linda was born on February 16, 1949, in Lexington, Mississippi, to Denton Rosamond Edwards and Maggie Frazier Edwards of West, Mississippi. She grew up in West, and was a 1967 graduate of Durant High School. She was a 1971 graduate of Mississippi State University. In 1973 she received a Master of Education, specializing in reading. Linda taught fifth grade in Kosciusko, Durant, Leflore County, and Pillow Academy in Greenwood, before retiring after a 26 year teaching career. Linda was a member of First Baptist Church in Oxford and a former member of North Greenwood Baptist Church in Greenwood. She and her husband lived in Itta Bena for thirty-four years, before retiring in Oxford to be near their only child, Amy Hardin.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, William Lee Edwards, of Kosciusko, Mississippi.
Linda is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Thomas Hardin Murphey; a daughter, Amy Hardin Shirkey, and husband, Jason; and her two precious grandchildren, Michael Hardin Shirkey and Molly Landrum Shirkey, all of Oxford; a twin sister, Brenda Collins of Southaven; a brother J.H. Edwards, and wife, Betty Faye, of Durant; sister-in-law, Maureen Edwards of Kosciusko; nieces, Christy Wiseman and Heather DeShouten; and nephew, Bill Edwards.
