Jura Mae Gillespie Grice was born on September 19, 1923 to Paul E. Gillespie and Margie Winters in Calhoun County, Mississippi. She professed a hope in Christ at an early age and became a member of Zion Spring Missionary Baptist Church, Okolona, Mississippi. Upon moving to Baldwyn, Mississippi, she joined Springhill Missionary Baptist Church. She served as the President of the Women Missionary Society, Adult Sunday School teacher and a member of the adult choir. She was a very active member of the church until she became unable to attend “due to health reasons.” She was united in Holy Matrimony to J.H. “Dick” Grice on April 6, 1946 and to this union two children were conceived – Marjorie Grice Johnson and Albert J. Grice.
Her educational career began at Okolona Schools where she received
her High School Diploma. After her high school completion she attended
Okolona Jr. College where she received an Associated Degree in
Elementary Education. She went on to further her education by earning
a bachelor’s degree from Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
Her professional career began at Baldwyn Colored Schools in 1946
as a first grade teacher in 1959, she was employed at Lee Prentiss
School. After integration in 1970, she became a staff member of
Baldwyn Public Schools and retired with 37 years as an educator
within Baldwyn Mississippi Community Schools. She loved her students
and inspired many lives in her career.
She was blessed to live ninety-six years and was peacefully called
home to be with the Lord Friday, September 11, 2020 at North
Mississippi Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband,
J.H. Grice (Dick), her son, Albert Grice, her parents, Paul and Margie
Winters, two brothers, Leslie Fuller and Elbert Gillespie and one sister,
Rhonnie Fuller.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories, one daughter: Marjorie
Grice Johnson of Baldwyn, MS; daughter-in-law: Edwina Grice of
Baldwyn, MS; three granddaughters: Mitzi Moment (Darrell) of
Baldwyn, MS, Christa Moment (Steve) of Caleria AL and Mallory
Moment of Baldwyn, MS; Karen Grice-Ragin (Clifton) of Rootstown,
OH; Sean Michael Grice (Rachel) of Columbus, OH; 12 great-grands
whom she loved dearly and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other e Gillespie Grice passed away on Friday, September 11,2020 at North MS. Medical Center.
