Ray Albert Furr, Jr., 74, died Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi. There are no services planned at this time.
Ray was born on February 23, 1949, in Charlotte, NC, to the late Elizabeth Sugg and Ray Albert Furr, Sr. An avid reader, he was a lifelong student of Political Science, Religion, and Philosophy, devouring as many books as he could on the subjects and always challenging and expanding his knowledge of them. This pursuit led him to The University of Mississippi, where he studied for his Master’s Degree in both Political Science and Philosophy. Ray was actively involved with the university’s Furr Dialogue Series, an endowed lecture event held in memory of his late brother, William Hal Furr. Through the series, Ray found great fulfillment sharing his knowledge with students and connecting with colleagues in the field. His love for Ole Miss expanded beyond the academic, as a devout fan of the Rebels and all college football.
Ray led a quiet, peaceful life, finding solace in his daily walks through his neighborhood. He loved to visit with his neighbors, developing many wonderful friendships with those in his community. Quickly becoming a beloved fixture, everyone looked forward to Ray stopping by on his walk to say hello and catch up, and his presence in the neighborhood will be greatly missed by all. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Hal Furr.
Ray is survived by his sister-in-law, Cynthia Furr Linton of Oxford, MS; nieces, Ginger Harrell, Susannah Furr, and Libby Furr, all of Oxford, MS; as well as many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
